The design is part of a system ARM calls big.LITTLE, similar to the ‘companion core’ concept found in Nvidia’s Tegra 3 and 4 processors, but Samsung is the first company to attempt to launch an eight-core device into smartphones and tablets.

According to details posted to the AnTuTu Benchmark site, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature the model number GT-I9500. No other details were made public by the benchmark results, but previous rumors claim that the handset may feature a new 4.99in display with a Full HD 1080p resolution, 2GB of RAM and a high-resolution 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. The handset is expected to launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as its operating system, becoming one of the first non-Nexus devices to feature the latest build of Google’s popular mobile platform.

Thus far, Samsung has not commented on the rumors surrounding its Galaxy S4 handset plans.

Announced back in at the start of October, we were hoping the Galaxy S3 Mini would bring the power of the Samsung Galaxy S3 in a smaller, slightly more affordable package.

We were a little disappointed when we found out the Galaxy S3 Mini wasn’t as powerful as was first thought, with a 4-inch 480×800 display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB/16GB of internal memory and 5MP rear camera.
The good news

On the plus side though the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini does come running Android 4.1, and while there’s currently no word on an upgrade to Android 4.2, we’re pretty sure this smartphone will be seeing the latest version of Jelly Bean at some point.

Samsung hasn’t revealed the pricing structure for the Galaxy S3 Mini, but you’ll probably be able to pick it up for around £300, with Expansys offering the 8GB model for £314.99, while over at Clove it’s listed at £298.80.

If you do plump for a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini then you’ll find that the Korean firm has kindly installed a couple of games for you to play, The Sims 3 and Bejewelled 2, which will keep you entertained for a while.

While both devices have some similarities, there are some pretty key differences here as well. Let’s take a quick look at specs, dimensions and the software running inside to get a better idea of how the two Android phones really compare next to each other.

Weight and Dimensions

Both devices are large-screen phones that still have a fairly sleek and sexy overall design. The Nexus 4 probably has a design that is going to appeal to those looking for more eye candy though.

As for actual size, the Galaxy S3 is thinner at .34-inches, versus the Nexus 4′s .36-inch thickness. Weight wise, the Galaxy S3 is also just 133g, while the Nexus 4 is a bit heavier at 139 grams. Is this a HUGE difference? For most of us, probably not.

Display

Pretty close here. The 4.7-inch Nexus 4 has a 1280 x 768 display with a ppi of 318. In contrast, with the Galaxy S3 you get a 4.8-inch 306ppi device with a resolution of 1280 x 720.

Processor and RAM

With the Nexus 4 you have a Quad-Core Qualcomm S4 running at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM.

As for the S3? It depends. In the North American market you get a Qualcom S4 dual-core at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM. As for the international market, you get a quad-core Exynos at 1.4GHz with just 1GB of RAM.

While the Nexus 4 might be a little faster here, it’s really hard to say for sure considering the major differences between the international and North American Galaxy S3.

Storage

Honestly, the Samsung Galaxy S3 really wins here. You have 16/32/64GB choices and can expand the memory even further with an SD slot. As for the Nexus 4? No SD slot and only 8 and 16GB storage sizes.

Battery

Actually, the batteries in both devices are 2100 mAh. That being said, the Nexus 4 doesn’t have LTE so it might actually perform better. Probably too early to call for sure.

Wireless

Unfortunately, the LG Nexus 4 just has HSPA+ 42 and no 4G LTE. This might not matter to you if you are in a region that doesn’t have 4G LTE, though. In many ways HSPA+ 21 and 42 are more widespread than LTE anyhow.

This is probably where preferences are really going to kick in hard. If you absolutely want LTE… the Samsung Galaxy S3 wins here.

Cameras

The Nexus 4 gives us an 8MP rear cam and 1.3MP front cam. The Galaxy S3 has an 8MP rear cam and a 1.9MP front cam. At least on paper, these two devices are pretty on par in this category.

Operating System

While both devices are running Android, many markets have yet to even get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean delivered to the Samsung Galaxy S3 yet– let alone the new Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. While there isn’t that major for some users, it is still another factor to consider. If you want the latest version of Android, the Nexus 4 has it and the Galaxy S3 still doesn’t. Also worth noting, the Galaxy S3 has the TouchWiz interface, while you get a vanilla Android experience with Nexus devices.

So Which Wins?

Honestly, there is no clear winner here. If you want a solid device that is fast and has the latest version of Android but don’t care about LTE, you might certainly want an LG Nexus 4.

If you want more storage space and 4G LTE (in select markets) then you might want to consider the Samsung Galaxy S3. What is great about Android devices is that there is a wide variety out there, which makes it easy to find something tailored directly to what you are looking for. Which do you prefer, the Galaxy S3 or the new LG Nexus 4?

If price is a factor, the LG Nexus 16GB might also be worth looking at since it is only $350 unlocked, versus 16GB for an unlocked Galaxy S3. If you want a contract, there are sometimes some pretty good deals for the Galaxy S3 with a two-year commitment, though.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Nokia Lumia 920 vs HTC One X – Camera Quality

The French blogosphere is at it again and after we had the chance to see a Lumia 920 hands-on video previously shared by a French tech blog, the guys over at Test Mobile.fr have recently visited Finland and were able to take the Lumia 920 “out for a walk”.
They’ve taken quite a few pictures in low-light conditions, using the rear-facing sensors on the 920, the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3, One X and even the PureView 808.

The results are once again as expected and the Lumia 920 takes the cake with its amazing shooter. It not only overtakes the iOS and Android smartphones, but manages to surpass the 42 MP camera on its distant cousin (Nokia 808 PureView) as well, proof that the amount of megapixels is not everything.

But in all fairness, it’s not as if the pictures taken by the iPhone 5 or the two Android flagship phones are unusable. All these handsets have done a decent job, but the Lumia 920 is just so much better and we’re very excited to once again see its full capabilities, at least when it comes to taking pictures in low light.

So with that in mind we have a short hands on video with Sammy’s first Windows Phone 8 handset, the Samsung Ativ S, which comes our way courtesy of Engadget who managed to get a little playtime with the new smartphone at Microsoft’s launch event, and recorded the occasion.

The Samsung Ativ S spots a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD touch screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution, and looks quite a bit like the Samsung Galaxy S3, as the device doesn’t sport a unibody build but rather Samsung has gone with the glossy plastic casing found on their Galaxy devices but with a few cosmetic differences.

The Samsung Ativ S sports an 8 megapixel rear facing camera with flash, 1080p full HD video recording, along with a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera, on the front of the handset there is a physical button sporting Microsoft’s latest logo along with two capacitive buttons for back and search.

The guys spent a little time playing with the Ativ S, and say that the smartphone delivers exactly what one would expect from Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 UI, whilst the 1.5GHz processor worked well with the operating system’s initial offering, and of course the device comes with a few of Samsung’s own apps including ChatON, Music Hub and the likes.

Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets on O2 and Vodafone are now getting updated to Android Jelly Bean still no love for SIM-free devices though.

Vodafone said: “Great news, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be made available for Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets purchased from Vodafone on Monday.”

Vodafone and O2-branded Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets will receive Android Jelly Bean today, ahead of unlocked SIM-free variants.

The news was confirmed by The Inquirer, which reports the rollout of Android 4.1 (AKA Jelly Bean) has begun and will be available across all networks over the coming weeks, pending software testing and approvals.

O2 and Vodafone have now both confirmed that their Android 4.1 updates will be going live today.

The rollout will be staggered, however, so some users on Vodafone might not get the OTA update today. Vodafone says all Galaxy S3 handsets on its network should have the update within a couple of days though.

O2 confirmed that Jelly Bean is now available for download on all Galaxy S3 handsets locked to its network via its official forum.

Although a rollout to unlocked devices has already started in Poland, Samsung has yet to confirm when it will be rolling out Android Jelly Bean to unlocked Galaxy S3 handsets in Western Europe. In light of today’s news, we hope it’s sooner rather than later.

Samsung Galaxy S3 at Verizon: New Update Brings Small Fixes, Not Jelly Bean.

The point is, in case you happen to own Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S3 then you should find out that the carrier has just rolled-out a new build, and although it’s still not Android 4.1, bug fixes are always welcomed. More details below.

Alright ladies and gents, the latest released build (VRALHE) is currently available for download over-the-air so if you haven’t received it on your Verizon SGS3 just yet, sit tight and it’ll eventually arrive.

As to what it will bring new to the table, version VRALHE brings enchantments to the Zooming Feature used when browsing the web, reading emails and so on, Google Play will be more stable, and once you apply this new build, your device will also reset less often, which is always good.

The file is about 62 MB in size so don’t expect any miracles, but any improvement is welcomed and waiting for the big Jelly Bean release while being able to use a less buggy operating system is better than nothing.

DESIGN

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini looks every bit the baby brother of the full-size Galaxy S3. Its body uses the same style of plastic outer, with a familiar removable battery cover on the rear.
Its bezel-to-screen ratio is a little worse and the body is a little thicker than the original S3, but this is to be expected of a smaller framed, more affordable device. It’s just a bit of puppy fat, if you will. Several of its dimensions are eerily similar to the first Galaxy S phone, released all the way back in 2010. It’s 9.9mm thick, 119g and 63mm wide.
It won’t feel quite as slick in-hand as the big daddy 4.8in Galaxy S3, but if you find that phone a little too much for your hand to take, you’ll probably find the Mini edition much easier to live with.

SCREEN

If there’s one element of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini that points it out as a compromised device, it’s the screen.

Elements of it are more-than fine. Its Super AMOLED panel is great and the 4in size offers a good compromise between size and performance. It’s the resolution that’s the problem.

480 x 800 pixels feels out of date in this age of HD-resolution phones. Again, we’re reminded of the 2010 Samsung Galaxy S, which had a display of identical baseline specs. In the flesh it’ll look decent, but it’s not going to impress the techies.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers a much better display. At 4.8in, it’ll be a little too large for some people, but its 720p resolution offers a superbly sharp image.

Both screens use Super AMOLED tech, which offers fantastic black levels and excellent contrast, although colours tend to look oversaturated. Samsung gives you some control over colour settings in its latest phones, though.

POWER

Other than the disappointing screen tech, the second-place part that shows the Galaxy S3 Mini up as a mid-range phone at best is the processor. Not only is it from a completely different processor family from the Galaxy S3′s Exynos model, it’s dual-core rather than quad-core.

This should give the Mini enough power to make Android Jelly Bean run perfectly smoothly 99 percent of the time, but it will mean that the small Galaxy S3 phone won’t produce anywhere near as impressive benchmark results. And it may not be able to keep up with some future 3D games. Each chipset uses a Mali-400 based graphics processing unit, but the Mali-400MP of the Galaxy S3 is optimised for quad-core processors and produces better results.

Both the number of cores and the clock speed is higher in the 6-month-old Galaxy S3. It uses a 1.4GHz quad-core chip while the S3 Mini has a 1GHz dual-core CPU.

SOFTWARE

The one part that the Galaxy S3 Mini arrives out front (for the time being) is software. It uses the latest Android version, Jelly Bean, with the Samsung TouchWiz UI smeared on top.

In most parts of the world, the Samsung Galaxy S3 still uses the previous edition, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Unless you live in Poland, you’ll still have to wait for the update to fly its way over to your neck of the woods. We did think that data could travel across the globe at near-light speeds, but perhaps Android updates are distributed by carrier pigeon these days

CONNECTIVITY

Samsung deserves a high-five for some of its hardware approaches taken in both the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini and Galaxy S3. Both phones use the up-and-coming NFC wireless communications standard, have all the usual Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/GPS gubbins and feature the industry standard microUSB slot for charging and data transfer.

CAMERA

Once again, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini feels the cuts involved in stepping down from the level of a flagship phone to a mid-range one. It offers a 5-megapixel camera sensor while the Galaxy S3 has an 8MP camera. The secondary cameras show a similar gap, with a VGA user-facing sensor against the superior 1.9MP sensor of the previous S3 model.

Samsung tends to produce rather good phone cameras, but we do not doubt that the S3 Mini will be thoroughly outpaced by its big brother. As if to demonstrate this, the Mini edition is only capable of capturing video up to 720p in resolution, while the earlier S3 can snag 1080p video.

BATTERY

Once again, the Samsung Galaxy S3 reminds of the original Samsung Galaxy S, this time in its battery capacity. Like the great grandfather of the series, the new Mini features a 1500mAh unit. That’s a good deal smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S3′s 2100mAh battery.

Of course, one of the biggest drains on a phone’s battery is the screen, and the smaller, lower resolution of the Mini’s 4-incher should ensure somewhat-comparable battery stamina. You’re looking at around a day and a half’s moderate use from a charge.
We’ve taken a look at the specs of both phones to see if the family resemblance is more than skin deep.

STORAGE

As a lower-cost device, we’re not too surprised to see that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini doesn’t offer particularly high-capacity options. You’re stuck with either 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, while the full fat Samsung Galaxy S3 goes all the way up to 64GB (although good luck finding the 64GB model in the UK…).

Initial storage isn’t a huge concern, though, as both phones come with a microSD memory card slot that lives under the battery cover.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Samsung seemed to claim that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini was like a Galaxy S3 crammed into a smaller body. But that’s not really true. It’s much more like a revisited Samsung Galaxy S, a phone that’s more than two years old. This isn’t a terrible thing, but means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is a perfunctory mid-range phone rather than something particularly exciting and new.

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 have been waiting a while now for their handsets to be updated, and it seemed the update had begun rolling out last month as owners in Poland began to see the new software. Now as the Android Police are reporting owners of the handset in Sweden have begun receiving it via KIES.

This is the official version of the software with the build being called 4.1.1 I9300XXDLIH, and seems to be destined for unlocked versions of the Galaxy S3. Hopefully any bugs that appeared with the software in Poland have been fixed, and should mean other European countries could also be about to get the software as well.

Meanwhile Sammobile are reporting that the Jelly Bean update should reach most countries by the end of this month, and the company also took to its Facebook page in the UK to reveal the Galaxy S3 should be available by the end of October.

It is not known if this stage of the rollout will include users in the US that have been left frustrated waiting for Android Jelly Bean to arrive. Considering this is the flagship smartphone from Samsung you would have thought the company would have upgraded the software by now.

The US release of Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S3 should be close though, as earlier this month a version for US carrier Sprint leaked, but it always seems that Samsung provides its US customers with software updates last.

DISPLAY

Samsung’s Galaxy S Duos features a 4-inch TFT display which operates at a resolution of 480 x 800 and sports a pixel density of 233PPI.

We can expect the screen to be both responsive and high quality, judging by Samsung’s previous, but we don’t expect it to hold a candle to the company&acirc’s AMOLED and Super AMOLED offerings.

Unfortunately for the Galaxy S Duos its stable-mate, the Galaxy S3, features arguably the best Super AMOLED display the company has ever produced a 4.8-inch beast with a resolution of 720 x 1280 and a pixel density of 306PPI.

The screen is truly brilliant, with great viewing angles, impressive brightness and sunlight legibility and some of the most vivid colours you’ll ever see.

SOFTWARE

Both devices run on version 4.0.4 of Google’s Android OS, which has become popularly known as Ice Cream Sandwich, and the software is great. It’s fast, stable and offers a great amount of potential for customisation and tweaking.

The Android OS is now more than able to keep up with Apple’s market leading iOS too, thanks to refinements made to core apps, improved visuals, upgraded camera performance and a ton of bugfixes.

Again, both devices share the company’s TouchWiz UI overlay, which brings extra apps, widgets and eye candy to them, but the overlay isn’t perfect and some may find it a little cluttered.

CAMERA

The Samsung Galaxy S3 features an 8-megapixel primary camera which benefits from simultaneous HD video & image recording, touch focus, face & smile detection, image stabilisation and geo-tagging and the device is capable of shooting high quality 1080P video.

The device also has a secondary 1.9-megapixel camera which can shoot 720P video.

Real world performance from the Galaxy S3′s primary shooter is great. You can snap print-worthy images with relative ease and captured video is excellent in the right light, perfect for capturing happy memories and fails alike.

The Galaxy S Duos has a primary 5-megapixel camera with geo-tagging, autofocus and LED flash, and also sports a secondary VGA camera for video calling.

The Galaxy S3 is a big, beautiful beast with clean lines and a premium appearance. When you dig below the surface you find a device which is well designed and built from high end plastics, to give it a light weight and durability which is perfect for a device that’s going to be carted around day to day.

The Galaxy S Duos isn’t a world away from the GS3 in terms of looks. It’s bold looking the single Home button arrangement that we’ve seen plenty of times before from Samsung and the addition of some matte to proceedings gives the S Duos a more understated appearance than its big brother.

As mentioned, these devices aren’t miles apart in either build quality or looks. The Galaxy S3 is clearly the bigger, more ostentatious of the two but if you’re looking for something a little less eye-catching then the Galaxy S Duos will do a job!

The Samsung Galaxy 3 is driven by Samsung’s own Exynos 4412 Quad chipset which consists of a quad-core CPU clocked to 1.4GHz and a Mali-400MP GPU. The pair are amazingly powerful and great for multi-tasking, gaming and enjoying HD movies and other content.

The device also features 1GB RAM, 16, 32 or 64GB of on-board memory and a slot for micro SD cards which supports up to 64GB in capacity.

In addition to this the Galaxy S3 sports a stereo FM radio, A-GPS, support for virtually any video and audio codec you’d care to mention, Smart Stay eye tracking, and the excellent S-Voice system which allows for voice control and dictation.

The Galaxy S Duos is powered by a single-core Cortex-A5 chip clocked to 1GHz, offers Adreno 200 graphics and 4GB of on-board storage space, alongside 768MB RAM and a slot for micro SD cards though this device only supports cards up to 32GB in capacity.

The S Duos, as its name suggests, also supports dual-SIM usage, meaning you can load the device up with your personal card and your work card at the same time and make and receive calls from both without having to chop and change at random intervals, and the device is also capable of managing both SIM’s billing details separately too which is great news for those who have to keep track of money spent.

The device also supports video playback, though it doesn’t offer the wide-range of codecs of the Galaxy S3.

The Galaxy S Duos has its niche it’s an Android-powered dual-SIM device. If you don’t need the dual SIM functionality then you could take your money elsewhere and get more bang for your buck, but the device is one of the better dual-SIM smartphones that we’ve come across.

The Galaxy S3 though, is still the finest example of smartphone hardware around at the moment. Sure, it’s big and unwieldy for those with small hands, but it’s very powerful and Google’s OS is just brilliant.
