Days after Samsung revealed two of its tablets were finally getting an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, fresh rumours are suggesting owners of the flagship Galaxy S3 handset could be due for a similar pleasant surprise as early as this autumn. The device, which has sold more than 10 million units since its May release, will be the first Samsung phone to get an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, Sam Mobile is reporting.
According to the website, “inside sources†have confirmed that the testing phase for Jelly Bean on the Galaxy S3 has successfully concluded. Engineers are now finalising the public version of the update, set for a release at the tail end of the year’s third quarter or at the beginning of the fourth.
Samsung’s Galaxy S2, the S3’s still-popular predecessor, and the Galaxy Note are also reportedly due to receive Jelly Bean; both are undergoing testing for the firmware and, given that their sales have reached the millions, an update to 4.1 is likely coming soon.
The Galaxy Note 2, which will be released on 29 August at the IFA trade show, is expected to launch with Google’s last-generation 4.0 firmware. But according to Sam Mobile’s insider, there’s no word yet on whether Samsung will stick with that plan – releasing the device with Ice Cream Sandwich and offering an update to Jelly Bean in the subsequent months – or whether it will launch the Galaxy Note 2 with the latter from the get-go.
Samsung has yet to reveal a confirmed date for delivering a Jelly Bean update to their flagship devices, saying only that, “We will announce updates to the rest of our Galaxy portfolio of devices in due course.â€
The manufacturer delays in releasing new versions of Android to their plentiful handsets are a consistent strike against the operating system. A staggering 60 per cent of Android devices are still running 2.3 Gingerbread, which was first released two years ago. Meanwhile, less than 16 per cent are on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and only 0.8 per cent have 4.1 Jelly Bean.
